PGZ Designer Interview #2: Zombie House Blitz
We had the chance to pull Jeremiah Lee away from the Zombie House Blitz Kickstarter Campaign to talk about game design.
Tell us a little about Zombie House Blitz.
Zombie House Blitz is a casual speed card game for 2 to 4 players, it’s on Kickstarter right now at KCK.ST/ZHBKS. There are no turns, players are racing to get all of the people out of the house before anybody else does, they get points for people that escape, and they lose points for people that are eaten by zombies, or for any grandmas they decide to leave behind. You know, grandmas can be slow. We don’t support grandma killing, but sometimes you have to make hard choices.

What’s your design process? How do you prefer to start a game design?
I usually start with an idea about the theme of the game. I start to build the game around the theme and make design decisions from there. I tend to write down three or four words that pin down what I’m trying to do in each design. Things like “speed, family, card-based” were my thoughts for Zombie House Blitz.
Were there any issues or roadblocks? How about eureka moments?
Early in Zombie House Blitz’s development there were a lot more cards, many more than the 36 in each deck now. Players were getting stuck with too many cards in their ‘house’, and it was slowing the game down. When the game was cut down, things moved much faster, there was less confusion, and it made the game cheaper to produce, which is always good.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten on game design?
It’s better to remove something than to add something. Elegance leads to better designs more often than stuffing-everything-in.
What’s the most important thing you’ve discovered on your own?
I’ve discovered that if I don’t design games, I never get any games done. It’s really important to just keep working on games.
Can you tell us about any other designs you’re working on?
I’ve just alpha tested a game called Kitty Corral, which is a kid’s game that I’m hoping to sell to a publisher in the very near future. I played it for the first time a couple days ago, and the playtest couldn’t have gone better. It’s a simple game, so while I’m going to be doing more playtesting, it won’t have to go through as much to make sure it’s sound.

It’s game night. Where does Zombie House Blitz fit? What goes best with it?
The game is a great fit for starting game night, or ending as well. The game plays in about 20 minutes, and it’s fine for people to play one round and then either switch out with someone else, or just play another game. It would certainly work well to get people excited after a long and intense euro game, as well.
What’s your favorite game hitting the table these days?
Zombicide, Coup, and I’ve had the chance to play Tales of Arabian Nights twice this month!
What’s your favorite game not hitting the table?
Diplomacy, because it’s a 4-12 hour game, and The Resistance. I’m not playing The Resistance much right now because I’m playing Zombie House Blitz in the times that I would have played Resistance. Once I’m not promoting ZHB all the time, I’ll get back to The Resistance.
You’re heading into space and only have enough fuel to take 5 games. What games do you NEED to bring with you?
Diplomacy, Dune, The Resistance, Catacombs, Ambush

The guys from ‘Zombie House Blitz’ came up with this clever infographic promotion for their kickstarter campaign.
I had to share it. If you haven’t already watch our archived live steam play test of the game (the designer was in the chatroom at the time) and go donate (click here)!
They’re almost half way to their goal, so help get them over the hump!
Check out yesterdays live behind the scenes video. We played Zombie Houes Blitz, now funding on kickstarter at:

RIP Stickam
Our live streaming playground has shut down. We were the 7th most watched show on stickam.com grabbing over 3 million views last year alone.
Now our own Sam Proof has taken up the cause of brining it back, in a show of faith, loyalty and love he’s asking people to donate to the crazy amount of 5 million dollars (the asking price for the company).
If you love us, you love stickam, whatever go donate a buck or 20. Remember you’ll get the donation back if he doesn’t hit his 5 million dollar goal - so there’s zero risk!
Space Zombies! and more
There were big happenings in gaming last week. The Pizza Games and Zombies Gauntlet (with prizes!!) was announced, and Sedition Wars: Battle for Alabaster shipped.
Studio McVey and Cool Mini or Not teamed up in June 2012 and brought you the newest game in the space horror genre. Nano-tech alien viruses making zombies on space stations and in spaceships? Yes, please!
The game ended up making $951,254 by the end of the Kickstarter campaign.
Some friends of mine chipped in and got Sedition Wars for me as a birthday present. It showed up last Tuesday, and I promptly started assembly.
Grendlr. Large and nasty

Space zombies!
(I cut one of the guys up and did some mixing and matching, added some green stuff, and some guitar string.)
The good guys
Today’s Kickstarter Game of the Day: Rivet Wars
This one is a dieselpunk WWI themed miniatures battle game. It’s from CoolMiniOrNot, who previously Kickstarted Zombicide to rave reviews. The minis look excellent, and the gameplay looks fun. Take a look for the Monowheel if nothing else :)
Love Settlers of Catan? Hate the Map Tiles!?
Today’s Kickstarter of the Day has a solution!
Check out these awesome Hexels that hold and lock your Catan board in to any possible shape without hassle! Simply brilliant! These guys have less than two weeks before their kickstart campaign ends so get your donations in now!
